The Retezat Mountains

A spectacular alpine massive, hard to decide the period of the year to visit.

In winter it is as difficult as the French Alps, in the summer as beautiful as the Italian Alps.

Its glacial lakes, alpine valleys and high peaks over 2500 m, make it one of the most beautiful mountains from the Carpathians, together with Piatra Craiului.

The access by train or car from Bucharest is quite difficult- considering that road infrastructure is not Romania’s strongest point, so going to the start of the hike requires almost a full day. However there are plenty of interesting sites along the way, so if you travel by car, just reserve a day for cultural visits.
